Solid Ground in a Shifting World: Trusting in Jesus
Edward Mote’s hymn from 1836: “On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand,” embodies the notion that God’s way offers us a steadfast foundation, contrasted with our own unstable ways. In Matthew 7, Jesus shares the parable of the wise and foolish builders. He describes how the “wise man built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock” (v 24-25). The fundamental premise of the Christian faith is Jesus as the solid rock. Our salvation only comes through Him.
Jesus Christ is God’s ultimate provision for each of us, as the Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:4, “all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ.” Much like the people of Israel, we are fallible. We complain. We sometimes wander in our own wilderness of sorts. We are so undeserving, but His grace flows like water for us all to drink. Jesus says, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink!” (John 7:37-38).
Your Call to Action
The offer of salvation through Jesus is available to everyone. He is the firm foundation and living water that we can depend on. His way leads to the fullest life. Trust in Him, seek His direction, and you can truly be free.
“He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved” (Psalm 62:6).
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust” (Psalm 18:2).
“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps” (Psalm 40:2).
Prayer
Dear Jesus, You are the Living Water, the ultimate provision. We want to build our lives on Your firm foundation. Help us make good decisions and follow Your lead. Guide us to a full and stable life in You. In Your precious name, we pray, Amen!
