Texas AG Finds ‘Facts’ Alleging Foreign Election Interference
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton shared a post Monday (Oct. 21) claiming an investigation into ActBlue “uncovered facts indicating bad actors can illegally interfere in American elections.”
Paxton sent a Petition for Rulemaking to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) detailing how “suspicious actors appear to be using ActBlue’s political fundraising platform to make a large number of straw political donations,” according to a statement from the AG’s office.
The statement comes almost a year after Paxton’s office opened an investigation into ActBlue to ensure the platform’s operations were in keeping with all applicable laws. In August, the investigation led to ActBlue requiring credit cards users to provide CVV codes to help secure the transactions. (MORE: Texas AG Sues Doctor Who Allegedly Tried To ‘Transition’ Kids)
Paxton’s Formal Statement
“Our investigation into ActBlue has uncovered facts indicating that bad actors can illegally interfere in American elections by disguising political donations. It is imperative that the FEC close off the avenues we have identified by which foreign contributions or contributions in excess of legal limits could be unlawfully funneled to political campaigns, bypassing campaign finance regulations and compromising our electoral system,” Paxton said in the statement.
“I am calling on the FEC to immediately begin rulemaking to secure our elections from any criminal actors exploiting these vulnerabilities.” (MORE: Megachurch Pastor Says Non-Voting Christians Go Against God)
Paxton’s office recommends the FEC “close fundraising loopholes that jeopardize election integrity.” To-date, ActBlue has been a vocal opponent of previous rules put forth by Paxton’s office, the statement noted.
“That opposition is no longer tenable in light of the Attorney General’s findings. If not corrected by the FEC, bad actors can—with trivial ease—illegally funnel foreign money into American elections, exceed political contribution limits, and more,” the statement added.
