The Cross Needs No Polish

The Cross Needs No Polish, Million Voices Creative Team

There’s a deep temptation in the modern world to make faith impressive, to dress up the gospel in polished words, clever arguments, or emotional appeal so that people might find it more persuasive. But the truth is, the power of God was never meant to rest on human eloquence or performance.

The Apostle Paul made this point clear when he wrote that Christ sent him “not to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.” His mission was simple, yet profound: to make sure the message of the cross stood on its own strength, untouched by the pride of human wisdom.

Paul wasn’t dismissing intelligence or communication; he was rejecting the idea that the gospel needs to be improved by human hands. In Corinth, a city captivated by rhetoric and reputation, Paul’s humility must have seemed radical. He refused to compete with the world’s standards of influence because he knew that the raw message of Christ crucified was more powerful than any speech or strategy.

When we share our faith today, we face the same choice. Will we rely on presentation, or on power? God isn’t impressed by how convincing we sound; He moves through truth spoken with conviction. The cross is not a product to be marketed but a gift to be proclaimed. It carries its own authority.

Call to Action

Today, let go of the pressure to be eloquent and focus on being authentic. Your testimony doesn’t have to be fancy; it just has to be true. Speak the gospel with confidence, knowing that God’s power is made perfect in simplicity. When you speak about Jesus, whether to a friend, a coworker, or even a stranger, don’t worry about sounding perfect. Worry about being faithful. The Holy Spirit doesn’t need your performance; He needs your obedience. That’s when hearts change.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” (Romans 1:16)

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” (2 Corinthians 4:7)

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14)

Prayer

God, place in my heart a boldness to preach Your word in power, and a heart of authenticity to speak Your word according to what is written. Jesus, may Your spirit show up in power in my conversations and encounters. I give You all the praise and glory!

Comforting Closure

You don’t need perfect words to make a difference—just a willing heart. The same power that raised Christ is alive in you, working through your humility and faith. Speak truth simply, love boldly, and trust that the cross will always speak louder than eloquence ever could.
