The Push to Abolish Property Taxes Gains Momentum

Conversations across the country are intensifying over the possibility of abolishing property taxes altogether. More Americans are asking a simple but profound question: if I am forced to pay taxes on my property, do I really own it? With this concern rising, many now believe the end of property taxes could happen in their lifetime.

Shortly after the new congressional maps passed the Texas Legislature, State Representative Brian Harrison posted online that Texas lawmakers will “move toward eliminating property taxes.”

While the announcement generated enthusiasm, many Texans remain skeptical. Dozens of responses to Harrison’s claim expressed doubt, with some saying there is “zero” chance the tax will be abolished.

A Long History of Property Taxation

According to the Texas Comptroller, “Texas has had property taxes as long as it’s been, well, Texas. In fact, the Mexican government’s elimination of a generous property tax exemption for settlers, as part of anti-immigrant laws put into place in 1830, helped spur the fight for Texas independence.”

The Comptroller further notes, “For the first century after Texas’ independence, the property tax supported not just local governments but the state as well, supplying 50 to 75 percent of all state tax receipts.”

The roots of property taxation stretch far beyond Texas. The United States had property taxes before it was even a nation. When the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts, they established a property tax to fund the church and provide religious education for children. And even that wasn’t the beginning, land taxes can be traced back to ancient Greece.

In short, property taxes are as old as civilization itself, which is why many Americans doubt that abolition could ever happen.

Calls for Reform

Despite the long history, public support for eliminating property taxes is growing. Many homeowners view the tax as an injustice that threatens the very concept of ownership. They argue that even after paying off their homes, they must continue to “rent” their property from the government.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently defended the idea of abolition, framing it as a matter of fairness. He said, “It’s almost as if they have to pay rent to the government just to be able to enjoy their property, and that’s wrong. We need to do something about it.”

U.S. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene echoed DeSantis’s concerns, posting: “We need to completely abolish property taxes. It forces us to pay ‘rent’ to the government on property that we own, but if we don’t pay property taxes, the property that we own gets taken away from us. That should never happen in a free country.”

Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has also weighed in, stopping short of abolition but advocating for capping property taxes so they cannot rise uncontrollably with home values.

Can It Happen?

Eliminating any tax is a monumental challenge, especially one with roots as deep as property taxes. But national voices are beginning to rally around the issue, creating momentum for a debate that was once unthinkable.

History shows that reforms often require years of persistence and pressure from both lawmakers and the public. Those who support abolition acknowledge it will not happen overnight, but they see progress in the fact that the conversation is finally being taken seriously at the national level.

For homeowners, and those who hope to one day own a home, it is at least a breath of fresh air to hear leaders openly question whether property taxes are justifiable in a free nation.

Could this be the beginning of a movement to reduce and eventually abolish property taxes? It is still too early to tell. But the conversation has begun, and once questions about ownership and freedom take root in the national conscience, they are not easily silenced.
