Trump Administration Reaffirms Religious Freedom in the Federal Workplace

Federal employees across the nation received a strong reminder in July that they have the right to pray, express their faith, and engage in religious activities while at work. A newly released memorandum from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), under the Trump administration, outlines updated guidelines protecting religious expression in federal workplaces.

The memo reaffirms that federal employees may engage in religious conversations, display religious items, and participate in religious expression, so long as such actions are not harassing or disruptive to the workplace.

Key protections outlined include:

  • The display and use of religious items or icons
  • Expressions of faith by groups of federal employees
  • Faith-based conversations between employees
  • Religious expression shared with or directed at the public
  • Religious displays or speech in public-accessible areas

Re-affirmation of Religious Liberty

This is not a new right—but a necessary reminder. In the words of the memorandum:

“The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution robustly protects expressions of religious faith by all Americans—including Federal employees. The U.S. Supreme Court has clarified that the Free Exercise Clause ‘protects not only the right to harbor religious beliefs inwardly and secretly,’ but also ‘protects the ability of those who hold religious beliefs of all kinds to live out their faiths in daily life.’ Indeed, ‘respect for religious express is indispensable to life in a free and diverse Republic.’”

President Trump’s OPM Director, Scott Kupor, reinforced this conviction clearly:

“Federal employees should never have to choose between their faith and their career.”

In just the past few decades, many Christians have faced this very fear of sharing their beliefs in the public workspace, especially the federal government. Trump’s administration to re-assert the First Amendment in the federal government comes as a breath of fresh air to those whose faith is central to their lives, yet have felt the need to hide it.

An Example of the History of Religion in the Federal Government

For decades, many religious Americans have felt pressure to keep their faith hidden in professional settings. This directive from the Trump administration not only reasserts legal protections already enshrined in the Constitution, but also sends a clear cultural signal: faith has a place in the public square—even in government offices.

Federal workforce history, if one can even call it that in the 16th century, without question encouraged prayer and religious—specifically Christianity—activities and services such as cooperate prayer. In 1774, Reverend Jacob Duché gave the opening prayer of the First Continental Congress, mentioning the name of Jesus in his prayer. America’s history of religion on Capitol Hill goes back centuries, but has only resurfaced, because bold leaders have taken a stand to restore it.

Reclaiming America’s Spiritual Heritage

Trump’s administration, in February, signed an executive order launching a DOJ task force to eradicate anti-Christian bias in the federal government, and sure enough, he is doing just that.

This move is not simply a policy correction—it is a moral reaffirmation of America’s founding principles. The freedom of religion and freedom of speech are cornerstones of our constitutional republic. Without them, the nation loses part of its identity.

Efforts to return the federal government back the importance of faith in the workspace does not end with a multi-page document ensuring that religious liberty is respected. Prudence demands action from the church and the voters. It is curical for voters to engage at the local level.

In a time when religious liberties have been increasingly contested, these guidelines serve as an important reminder: rights not exercised, or understood, are rights easily lost.
