In a spiritual battle that has revealed itself in political decay, President Trump has said that he plans on calling on America to pray ahead of America’s 250th birthday which will be on July 4th 2026. Trump launched the America Prays initiative, “a call for Americans to unite in prayer for the nation’s strength, peace, and prosperity as the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches.

Trump Launches Prayer Initiative

Several key points were covered during President Trump’s presentation at The Religious Liberty Commission. Some of the more notable included:

  • President Trump reaffirmed our nation’s founding principles
  • President Trump highlighted the importance of faith in God
  • President Trump defended our American values of faith
  • President Trump called for Americans to come together in prayer

In President Trump’s call for prayer, he asserted America’s spiritual heritage stating:

“As we prepare to celebrate two and a half centuries of freedom, I am inviting America’s great religious communities to pray for our nation and for our people. From the beginning, this has always been a country sustained and strengthened by prayer. So important, if we bring religion back stronger, you’re going to see everything get better and better and better. You are going to see it get better and better. So, as we chart our course for the next 250 years, let us rededicate ourselves to one nation under God.”

The Whitehouse posted on X (formerly Twitter) their official call for prayer leading up to 2026.

History of Prayer and Fasting

It is not unusual for the President of the United States to recognize a time of prayer. It is the courage to call America to begin praying a year ahead of America’s celebration of her 249-year existence as the greatest nation on earth. President Trump’s call to prayer is a heart posture from her top leadership that has not been seen in decades, certainly not since President Ronald Reagan.

Thomas Jefferson, a man who many believe to have not believed in God at all, wrote a Resolution for “a Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer to be observed…” including in the prayer:

“This House, being deeply impressed with apprehension of the great dangers, to be derived to British America, from the hostile invasion of the City of Boston, in our sister Colony of Massachusetts… deem it highly necessary that the said first day of June be set apart, by the members of this House as a Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, devoutly to implore the Divine interposition, for averting the heavy calamity which threatens destruction to our civil rights…Ordered, therefore that the Members of this House do attend…with the Speaker, and the Mace, to the Church in this City, for the purposes aforesaid; and that the Reverend Mr. Price be appointed to read prayers, and the Reverend Mr. Gwatkin, to preach a sermon.”

Furthermore, during the American Revolution, Congress issued sixteen spiritual proclamations, giving God glory and praise for His intervention in the war, from its beginning in 1775 to just after its conclusion in 1784.

The Battle is Spiritual

With the acceptance over the years of immoral behavior and laws, America has experienced a serious degradation of her culture and society. Any time this has happened in the past, there were calls for a National Day of Prayer and fasting. For Christians, this should be an easy decision. Many rightly believe that America is in the condition we are in because we have abdicated our role in society, ensuring that good laws are passed and the communities are taken care of, but the opposite is true.

America is entering a period where the only option left is a moment of humility, a moment to submit ourselves to God and recognize that our way is the right way, but only His way. On July 12th 1775, John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, expressing this very sentiment:

“We have appointed a Continental fast. Millions will be upon their knees at once before their great Creator, imploring His forgiveness and blessing; His smiles on American Council and arms.”

President Trump’s call for prayer is not only constitutional, but also necessary for the soul of America. It is required as a nation if we desire to exist for another 250 years.
