Trump Pushes to End Mail-In Ballots

President Trump recently declared that he will fight to end mail-in ballots in federal elections. This announcement has prompted Democrats into a frenzy, as they have strongly supported mail-in voting in recent years. If Trump succeeds, it could significantly impact Democratic victories moving forward.
According to Reuters, President Trump posted in part on Truth Social:
“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly Inaccurate, Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES.”
A History of Absentee Voting
The debate over absentee and mail-in ballots stretches back to the Civil War, when Union and Confederate soldiers were given the option to cast their ballots from the battlefield. Over time, the convenience of voting by mail spread. According to the National Postal Museum, it wasn’t until World War II that absentee voting applied across all 48 states.
Originally, absentee ballots were intended for soldiers away from home or citizens too ill to vote in person. Fast forward to 2025, and mail-in ballots are used in sweeping national elections that remain hotly contested.
Concerns Over Fraud
With the rise of advanced technologies and schemes to interfere in elections, many conservatives warn that voter fraud has become easier to commit. Where paper ballots were once secure, voting machines now dominate. Critics argue these systems create new opportunities for fraud, while Democrats insist efforts to restrict mail-in voting amount to election theft.

Conservative commentators, such as DC_Draino, argue that traditional absentee voting is fundamentally different from mass mail-in voting:

The National Conference of State Legislatures, which tracks election policies nationwide, notes on its website that some legislatures and citizens raise concerns about mail-in voting. Among the commonly cited issues are “the potential for coercion” and “an increase in voter ‘errors’ or residual votes.” NCSL does not endorse these positions but provides them as part of its nonpartisan reporting on state debates.
Voter Turnout and Security
Concerns over fraud are amplified by low turnout numbers. On average, only about 50% of the population votes in Presidential Elections, 40% in midterms, and far fewer in local races—sometimes in the single digits. This means a small number of questionable ballots could tip an outcome.
The Fourteenth Amendment states:
“No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States…”
This language was meant to protect citizens’ right to vote, not extend mail-in voting as a universal entitlement.

Limiting absentee ballots to those serving in the military or with legitimate needs reflects early American policy.
