Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard submitted her official resignation to President Donald Trump last weekend. She announced that she will officially step away from her cabinet position on June 30, 2026. This decision comes as her husband, Abraham Williams, faces a highly challenging medical battle.
Gabbard shared the difficult news in a formal resignation letter published late Friday afternoon. She revealed that Abraham has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. Her immediate priority is supporting her family during this difficult time.
During a scheduled meeting in the Oval Office, Gabbard notified President Trump of her decision. She explained that she could not continue to serve in such a demanding role while her husband fights this severe illness. She expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead the intelligence community.
In her letter, Gabbard noted that her husband faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months. She described Abraham as her rock throughout their eleven years of marriage. He has stood steadfastly by her side through military deployments, political campaigns, and her current service.
Gabbard stated that she cannot, in good conscience, ask him to face this fight alone. Her husband’s strength and love have sustained her through every challenge she has faced in public service. Now, she is stepping away to be by his side and fully support him.
Following her departure, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas will take over leadership duties. He will serve as the Acting Director of National Intelligence to ensure the agency continues its critical work. Gabbard has promised to assist with a smooth transition over the coming weeks.
Major Restructuring and Intelligence Achievements
Throughout her time as DNI, Gabbard initiated a transformational effort to reshape the intelligence community. She significantly reduced the overall size of the agency to create a more efficient operation. These massive restructuring efforts successfully saved American taxpayers more than $700 million per year.
Under her direct leadership, the agency implemented major transparency protocols and declassified historical government records. Gabbard released more than half a million pages of previously withheld intelligence documents to the public. These massive declassification efforts included documents related to the JFK and RFK assassinations.
Gabbard also declassified thousands of records tied to the Trump-Russia “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation. She argued that these specific documents showed previous intelligence officials politicized information during the 2016 election. Her actions aimed to advance unprecedented transparency and restore integrity to the intelligence community.
Additionally, Gabbard created the government’s first-ever “Weaponization Working Group” within the intelligence sector. This task force was designed to coordinate efforts across federal agencies to expose political weaponization. The group focused heavily on protecting the constitutional rights of everyday American citizens.
Her tenure also saw major achievements in border security and national counterterrorism operations. The National Counterterrorism Center, overseen by Gabbard, intercepted over 10,000 individuals with ties to narco-terrorism in 2025 alone. Furthermore, the agency successfully placed more than 85,000 individuals with similar ties on the national terror watchlist.
Despite leaving her role, Gabbard stated she remains forever grateful to the American people. She considers serving as the Director of National Intelligence to be a profound honor. Her administration colleagues have universally praised her significant progress at the ODNI.
Cabinet Transitions and White House Response
President Trump quickly responded to Gabbard’s resignation announcement with words of strong support. He posted a formal statement on Truth Social praising her work in his administration. He stated that Gabbard had done an incredible job and would be deeply missed by his team.
President Trump also took time to send his best wishes to Gabbard’s husband, Abraham. He noted that Gabbard rightfully wants to be with her husband to bring him back to good health. The president expressed absolute confidence that Abraham will soon recover and be better than ever.
Gabbard is now the fourth Cabinet official to depart during President Trump’s second term in office. Earlier this year, three other female cabinet secretaries left their respective positions within a single month. Those departures included Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
While some rumblings suggested internal policy disagreements, Gabbard’s letter strictly cited her husband’s health crisis. She previously faced congressional questioning regarding the administration’s military decisions overseas. However, she maintained that the intelligence community simply assesses threats rather than deciding military actions.
Gabbard remained publicly loyal to President Trump throughout recent geopolitical conflicts, including Operation Epic Fury. She routinely provided factual intelligence regarding foreign capabilities without criticizing the administration’s policy choices. Her focused leadership earned the respect of numerous officials across the federal government.
The White House continues to prepare for the upcoming transition of power at the ODNI. Acting Director Aaron Lukas will officially assume full responsibility for the intelligence community on June 30, 2026. Until then, Gabbard will finalize her current projects and help ensure there is no disruption in leadership.
