A report published Friday detailed how viewers believe Netflix edited the opening of “The Passion Of The Christ” to remove a Bible verse.

Footage shared on social media appears to show two different opening montages to Mel Gibson’s 2004 blockbuster movie “The Passion of the Christ,” which told the story of Christ in the last hours before His crucifixion, the Christian Post reported. The theatrical release of the film featured a passage from Isaiah 53, which was written around 700 years prior to Christ’s time on Earth. “He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; by His wounds we are healed.”

The verse comes from the Old Testament and is said to foretell Jesus’ horrific death at the hands of humanity. Some say the verse is no longer read in synagogues as it is considered a “forbidden chapter within Judaism.”

In the Netflix version of the film, viewers are left with a blank screen for a full 13 seconds, with zero context, music, or anything to explain why this is happening. The Christian Post reached out to Netflix to find out why the portion was removed from the film, or if this is just a locational issue, but did not receive a response at the time of writing.

“The 17th century Jewish historian, Raphael Levi, admitted long ago the rabbis used to read Isaiah 53 in synagogues, but after the chapter caused ‘arguments and great confusion,’ the rabbis decided that the simplest thing would be to just take that prophecy out of the Haftarah readings in synagogues. That’s why today when we read Isaiah 52, we stop in the middle of the chapter, and the week after, we jump straight to Isaiah 54,” Christian Post op-ed contributor, pastor Dan Delzell, told the outlet. At least one Christian Post reportedly accessed the film on Netflix in recent days, and said the verse was still there. How about you?
