What Are The Main Differences Between Christians And Muslims?

In July 2025, we asked Grok 3.0 to tell us the main differences between Christians and Muslims. Its answer was very in-depth, and pretty fascinating, so we thought we’d share it with you today!
Grok focused on the “key theological and ritual differences” between the specific Twelver branch of Shia Muslim and Christianity. While upwards of 85% of the world’s Muslim population identifies as Sunni, New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani publicly identifies as a member of the Twelver branch, a smaller niche subset of the 10-13% of Shia Muslims. Most Shia Muslims identify with the Twelver branch, and have smaller population numbers.
So, what did Grok have to say specifically about this niche subset and how it compares to the Christian faith? The short answer was:
Concept of God & Prophethood
“Twelver Shia: Believe in one God (Allah) and Muhammad as the final prophet, rejecting the Christian Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and Jesus as divine or the Son of God. Jesus is revered as a prophet but not divine,” Grok noted. (RELATED: Pastors Must ‘Make It Clear To Our People’ That Anti-Parent Transgender Laws Come From ‘One Political Party’)
“Christian Doctrine: The Trinity is central, with Jesus as the divine Son of God and part of the Godhead. This fundamental difference in monotheism versus Trinitarianism creates a core conflict.”
Role of Imams vs Jesus
“Twelver Shia: Recognize twelve Imams as infallible, divinely appointed successors to Muhammad, with spiritual and political authority. The Twelfth Imam (al-Mahdi) is a messianic figure in occultation, expected to return.”
“Christian Doctrine: Jesus is the sole Messiah and Savior, with no equivalent to the Imamate. The belief in Imams as infallible guides with divine knowledge conflicts with Christ’s unique role as mediator and redeemer.”
Salvation & Eschatology
There are a lot of big words in this section, so we thought we’d also define some of them for you. Firstly, the word “eschatology” means the aspect of theology concerned with “death, judgement, and the final destiny of the soul.” In the response given by Grok, it is essentially said that the Shia Islam belief conflicts with the Christian knowledge of salvation, or “soteriology.”
“Twelver Shia: Salvation comes through faith in Allah, following Islamic law (Sharia), and devotion to the Imams. The Mahdi’s return will usher in justice, not a redemptive act like Christ’s sacrifice.” (RELATED: Seattle Mayor Appears To Blame Christians For Being Violently Attacked)
“Christian Doctrine: Salvation is through faith in Jesus’ atoning sacrifice and resurrection. The Second Coming of Christ is central, and the absence of this redemptive framework in Shia Islam conflicts with Christian soteriology.”
Ritual Practices
“Twelver Shia: Practices like mourning rituals during Muharram (e.g., Ashura processions for Imam Husayn’s martyrdom) and temporary marriage (mut’ah) have no Christian equivalents. These can be seen as conflicting due to their absence in Christian tradition and differing views on marriage (mut’ah vs. Christian sacramental marriage).”
“Christian Doctrine: Christian worship centers on sacraments like the Eucharist and baptism, which have no parallel in Shia Islam. Shia rituals emphasizing martyrdom over resurrection differ from Christian focus on Christ’s victory over death.”
Religious Authority
“Twelver Shia: Follow the Ja’fari school and marja‘ taqlid (senior clerics) for religious guidance. Some adhere to wilayat al-faqih (clerical rule, e.g., in Iran), which contrasts with Christian ecclesiastical structures.”
“Christian Doctrine: Authority varies (e.g., papal authority in Catholicism, scripture alone in Protestantism), but the Shia reliance on Imams and clerics as near-divine figures conflicts with Christian views of authority rooted in Christ or scripture.” (RELATED: ‘Slaughtered On A Daily Basis’: Experts Call On Trump To End International Christian Genocide)
While there are many theological differences, as well as practical divergences between Twelver Shia Islam and the core fundamentals of Christian faith within the Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox doctrines, not all of the beliefs are in inherent “conflict,” Grok argued. For the most part, the two faiths simply differ in worldview.
Do You Know How Your Pastor Feels About Politics?
Your Sunday service doesn’t have to be political, but your day-to-day life outside of His four walls will always be dictated — in large part — by your elected officials. Ignorance of politics is like handing over control of your life to the greediest, most power-hungry serpent in the room. When we Use Our Voice, we bring a more Biblical worldview to our nation.
We’re in the middle of a Great American Revival, and we know there are so many incredible stories of faith being shielded by the corporate mainstream news media. Contact Your Reps To Protect America’s Future
It seems like every time we at Million Voices speak to lawmakers and their teams, they all tell us the same thing: if just 10 people in their district write them letters about issues that matter to them, they know they have a serious crisis on their hands. A thousand people could message that same lawmaker via email or social media, and it would mean nothing. But hand-written, or even printed and signed letters, will make your politicians take action (if they really care about your vote, that is).
Contacting your representatives should be easy, but there are myriad ways they can ignore your messages. That’s where we come in.
Yes, Million Voices helps you with voter guides. Yes, we send letters from YOU directly to your elected officials because it’s the only way to guarantee they’ll listen to you. Yes, we publish data, articles, text messages, and help bridge the gap between education and civic action. But what do you want? Tell us today.
We want to make YOU the hero of our American story by giving you the tools you need to make a difference, from your local, state, all the way up to the federal level.
