Wisconsin’s potential primary election is less than a week away — on Feb. 18 — and whether you’re a state resident or not, this is going to be a big year for local-level politics.

After the chaos of the 2024 election, and the whiplash-inducing speed of the new Trump administration, it can be easy to bury your head in the sand and wait for the next big election year to roll around. This is arguably the worst thing you can do for yourself in what many call an election “off year.” During these largely-locally led years, your elected officials can make huge changes that impact your life right where you live. Wisconsin in a prime example of how your state has as much, if not more power over your day-to-day life, and why you need to be paying attention.

What Is Happening In Wisconsin?

There are two elections in Wisconsin in the first half of 2025: Feb. 18 is the primary (if needed) and April 1, is the spring election. (OTHER NEWS: Trump’s Cabinet Confirmations (So Far…))

The reason the spring election is so important to resident of Wisconsin is because it’ll decide a high-profile Supreme Court race that’ll decide either a liberal or conservative majority. “Voters will also elect the next state superintendent of public instruction, several nonpartisan local and judicial positions, and potentially weigh in on local and statewide referendum questions,” according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (MJS).

Who Is Running For Supreme Court?

Judge Ann Walsh Bradley is stepping down from her position on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court, deciding not to seek reelection for another 10-year term, the outlet continued. Two candidates have launched campaigns to fill Bradley’s seat: Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel and Dane County Circuit Judge Susan Crawford. There will not be a primary for the Supreme Court race. (POPULAR: God’s Big Return To US Classrooms Could Happen In 2025)

The races are technically nonpartisan, but there is a belief that the “state Supreme Court race will again determine the ideological balance of the court,” the MJS added. The court has a “liberal majority” at the time of writing. This balance could sway Wisconsin’s legislation on issues like life.

What About Superintendent?

On Tuesday, February 18, all voters in Wisconsin will have the opportunity to participate in the primary election for superintendent of public instruction, according to another MJS article. The incumbent Jill Underly is seeking reelection for a second term under the endorsement of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.

Democratic Sauk Prairie School District superintendent  Jeff Wright and education consultant Brittany Kinser are challenging Underly. Kinser has not revealed her party affiliation, but has reportedly voted for Democrats and Republicans, according to the Wisconsin Examiner.
