Oregon Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek recriminalized the possession of most drugs, even in small amounts, Monday, paving the way to save thousands of lives in America’s silent crisis on mental illness.

The first-in-the-nation experiment to decriminalize drugs took place in Oregon in 2020, according to The Associated Press. The old law allowed pretty much anyone to hold drug that were deemed just for personal use, which likely led to the deaths of countless Oregon residents and those who traveled to the state to indulge in their addictions to a deadly degree.

Kotek rolled back the law after the experiment clearly failed. Now, those holding any type of illegal substance in Oregon could face up to six months in jail. Thankfully, the law also pushes for treatment options rather than criminal penalties. It is hoped that many people arrested for possession will instead choose treatment to avoid jail time. Support For The Law

Scientifically speaking, Oregon’s decision to stop criminalizing drug addicts has likely led to the unnecessary deaths and traumas of countless people who would have sought help had they been arrested for their drug use. In his book “The Least of Us,” writer Sam Quinones details how a myriad of largely Republican judges and Christian organizations are key to developing support structures for addiction and rehabilitation across the U.S.

“Some who historically supported the measure voted for the new law during this year’s short legislative session. While other Democratic lawmakers opposed the measure, concerned it would result in more arrests and exacerbate social inequities, it ultimately passed the Democrat-controlled Legislature last month,” The AP wrote in their coverage.
