Assassination Is ‘First Political Memory’ For Many Gen Z

Jul 19, 2024

On this Friday, after a terrifying week for America, it may be time to reflect on the magnitude of major political moments have on our psyche. And for young Americans, the attempted assassination of 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, was their first introduction to the scary world of political leadership.

Millennials are often thought to be one of the most bombarded generation when it comes to historical significance. Born between the mid 1980s to 1990s, Millennials lived through everything from the death of the landline, invention of Google, the normalization of the home computer, and then things Columbine, 9/11, the war in the Middle East.

Analysis published by the Washington Stand highlights how, for many members of the Gen Z generation (born after Millennials), the assassination attempt is their “first political memory.”

What Are Gen Z Saying?

“I’m 26 years old,” the outlet quoted one person. “It’s the first time in my entire life that I’ve seen heroic action taken by a public figure that’s reminiscent of what I’ve read in history books about figures like Caesar or Napoleon.”

“[I] was watching live with my little boy. He was inches away from watching the most disturbing thing he’s ever seen, but by the grace of [G]od, he instead watched a man being made into a real-life hero. Incredible,” said another, following Saturday’s attack. (LEARN MORE: State Finds County Violated Election Law In 2022)

“My seven-[year-old] was even asking about it. Truly is the first political memory for a generation.”

“Gen Z is responding to the event of the assassination attempt on Saturday with great respect for former President Trump,” said Family Research Council’s Brand Advancement department intern Melia Ross told the outlet. She added that people “are proud that Trump” was so quick to bounce back and stand strong after the attack.

“In my university classes, Trump is called a racist, misogynistic, and evil person almost daily. And as a young person in this environment, if you support Trump in any capacity, you identify as all these characteristics as well,” another interviewee noted. “The shooter was only 20 years old, and for the past seven years has heard Trump being compared to the likes of Hitler.” For Lang, this is likely “the result of a child spending his teen years in [a] divisive political environment, with Marxist professors and teachers and the media painting Trump as a villain. He is the result of being made into an activist.” (LEARN MORE: Life Wins Big In Federal Court Against Biden)
