Trump Urges Christians to Step Into Public Office

In a video gaining national traction, President Trump has called on churches across America to recruit 500 members to run for public office in the 2026 midterm elections and the 2028 general election. His request comes on the heels of his America Prays initiative, an effort to unite Christians in prayer ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026.

In the video, Trump directly commended David and Cindy Lane, founders of the American Renewal Project, saying, “I will be cheering you on as you recruit 500 church members to run for office in 2026 and 2028.” He also highlighted a growing trend: “More of you are running and you’re winning.”
Faith and Politics Intertwined
This step seems to mark a new level of commitment to religious liberty. Among his long list of promises, Trump has consistently pledged to protect religious freedom in America. His prayer proclamation earlier this year was a significant move in that direction. Now, his call for Christians to run for public office represents a bold patriotism not seen in decades.
Vice President J.D. Vance echoed the message in a separate video: “Our only help to get to the civic renewal this nation needs is through Him, through a public restoration of faith in our homes and our communities and in every institution across this nation.” He continued with vision, “That’s why we’ve got to get leaders involved in the church and involved in public office. That is our path to renewal. At the end of the day, making our nation great once more, it’s impossible without God.”
Public Response and Rising Momentum
Trump’s video sparked positive reactions online, including from some who admitted their perspective on him had changed. One user wrote, “As someone who couldn’t bring myself to vote for someone I considered a clown in 2016—every day, he earns my respect, admiration, and gratitude. I am proud to have him as my president.”
The last true national revival in America occurred nearly 190 years ago, between 1795 and 1835. How the nation has endured nearly two centuries without another sweeping awakening is itself remarkable. Some might call it a miracle.
What continues to make Trump resonate with so many is his sharp awareness of the political landscape. He recognizes what many Americans already see: a nation in desperate need of something beyond itself. For too long, Americans have placed disproportionate value on careers and personal success, while neglecting the care of their nation. Trump’s call is the jolt the American church has long needed, an invitation to boldly embrace its assignment.
The Church’s Role in America’s Future
Christians in America now have a timely opportunity to seize the moment. We have a president openly urging believers to rise up and take their place in public life, to carry the torch of liberty, and to proclaim God’s goodness across the land. It would be unwise to wait or assume the next administration will offer the same chance. While many predict Vice President J.D. Vance will succeed Trump, there are no guarantees.
There is a very real possibility that America may be standing at the threshold of a Third Great Awakening, one that could ripple across generations. The future does not hinge solely on who sits in the Oval Office. We have been given grace now to confront the challenges that have burdened us for so long.
John Adams, speaking before the Massachusetts militia in 1798, famously declared:
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
Adams’ words remind us that the responsibility is ours. The next great awakening depends on the church rising, not only in pulpits, but also in the legislative chambers. This begins with prayer leading up to America’s 250th birthday and a crop of bold men and women willing to sacrifice their time to serve their county, their state, and their nation.
