The Democratic Party’s Leftward Shift Reaches Colorado

A rising Democratic star in Colorado is drawing national attention for saying the United States needs more immigrants from the “Global South” in elected office to challenge what she called the global world order. The candidate, Melat Kiros, is not a fringe activist shouting from the sidelines. She is the Democratic nominee for a Denver-area congressional seat and the favorite to win it this November.

A Socialist’s Vision for a New World Order

Kiros, a 29-year-old attorney and self-described democratic socialist, made the remarks at a community conference in Denver. She argued that America plays an “exploitative and extractive” role on the world stage and that real change will only come when the country is represented by immigrants who understand that critique from the inside.

Her proposed solution was blunt. The country needs “more immigrants into office,” she said, and specifically more officeholders with roots in the Global South, because that is where she believes the decisions that shape the world should be made. She described the goal as a coming reckoning that would fundamentally reshape the international order.

For many Americans, the comments landed as something far more serious than routine campaign talk. They described a deliberate plan to change the nation’s direction by changing who holds power, rather than by winning the public over on the merits of an idea.

From Primary Upset to November Favorite

Kiros is no long shot. In June, she defeated Diana DeGette, the 15-term incumbent who had held the Denver seat for nearly three decades, in a stunning Democratic primary upset. More than three million dollars was spent on the race, and Kiros carried the endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Her win was part of a larger wave. Candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America have knocked off establishment Democrats in New York and now Colorado, a sign that the party’s hard-left flank is gaining real ground. Because the Denver district is considered solidly Democratic, Kiros is heavily favored to win in November and take office in January.

Her platform matches the rhetoric. On the campaign trail, she has called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, passing government-run health care, and ending what she describes as American complicity abroad. These are not the positions of a moderate seeking common ground but the goals of a movement determined to move the party sharply leftward.

That trajectory is exactly why her words carry weight. This is not a protest candidate blowing off steam at a rally. It is a likely future member of Congress describing, in plain terms, how she views America’s role in the world and what she intends to do about it.

A Pattern the Country Has Seen Before

Kiros has a history of provocative statements. Fox News reported that she previously called 9/11 inevitable as a consequence of American foreign policy, a claim that alarmed many observers. Critics say such rhetoric reveals a worldview that blames America first and treats the nation’s founding principles as obstacles to overcome.

The pushback has not come only from the right. One America News reported that Colorado Republicans and even some moderate Democrats sounded the alarm over her new world order language and her call to halt all United States military aid to Israel, including defensive systems. Her supporters, by contrast, defend the agenda as a humanitarian effort to dismantle what they see as global exploitation.

Her rise fits a pattern that Congress has already moved to confront. Last year the House passed a resolution condemning socialism in all its forms, warning that socialist movements throughout history have produced famine, repression, and the loss of basic freedoms. That same season brought fresh scrutiny of another prominent socialist, New York’s Zohran Mamdani, including questions over citizenship and his ties to the same movement now advancing in Denver.

Scripture reminds us that the nations of the earth are not accidents of history to be dissolved at will. “From one man He made every nation of men, and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.” A vision that treats national borders and identity as mere instruments of oppression runs against that created order.

What Kiros’s Rise Means for November

The story of Melat Kiros is bigger than one candidate or one district. It is a window into a movement that openly seeks to remake America’s institutions and rethink its place among the nations. Those who cherish the country’s founding principles have every reason to pay close attention.

The right response is not fear but clarity and engagement. That means learning what candidates actually believe, supporting leaders who defend American sovereignty and the rule of law, and showing up to vote in every race, including the ones that appear already settled.

America’s strength has never come from apologizing for its own existence. It has come from a people who believe their country is worth defending and who are willing to stand for that belief when it counts. November will test, once again, whether that conviction still holds.
