U.S. officials warned Wednesday of Chinese Communist Party-backed (CCP) efforts to plant malware into civilian infrastructures that could be used to disrupt the daily lives of Americans should we go to war with China.

FBI Director Chris Wray told lawmakers that there isn’t enough focus by the U.S. to prevent cyberattacks from foreign adversaries, Newsmax reported. “China’s hackers are positioning on American infrastructure in preparation to wreak havoc and cause real-world harm to American citizens and communities, if or when China decides the time has come to strike,” Wray told the House Select Committee on the CCP. “This is a world where a major crisis halfway across the planet could well endanger the lives of Americans here at home through the disruption of our pipelines, the severing of our telecommunications, the pollution of our water facilities, the crippling of our transportation modes — all to ensure that they can incite societal panic and chaos and to deter our ability” to defend ourselves, Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity director Jen Easterly noted.

Very Basic Flaws

“The truth is that Chinese cyber actors have taken advantage of very basic flaws in our technology,” Easterly continued. “We’ve made it easy on them.”

The U.S. has consistently pointed out examples of Chinese-backed groups who’ve hacked our infrastructure, such as Microsoft’s cloud hack in June of 2023.
