Federal Comms Says TikTok Has To Divest Ties To Chinese Govt

Commissioner of Federal Communications Brendan Carr wrote Sunday that the social media platform TikTok has to cut ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CPP) amid ongoing threats over privacy laws.
In his piece published by Newsmax, Carr wrote that “evidence shows that TikTok is unlike any other Big Tech company precisely because it is beholden to the CCP and advances its malign goals.” (LEARN MORE: GOP Targets Chinese Military Aggression With New Bill)
“Privacy laws do not address the same sets of issues as national security laws. Just look at Europe. The EU has enacted what many describe as the strictest privacy and data flow laws in the world. Yet it has also taken separate actions to ban TikTok from official devices due to security concerns,” he continued. “Those TikTok bans in Europe would have been unnecessary if tough privacy laws alone were adequate to address the security risks posed by TikTok.”
TikTok Sends Your Data To China
Even if we manage to limit the flow of America’s personal data back to China, it would “do not think to address the foreign influence campaigns the CPP runs via TikTok. You may have seen memes recently where it appears everyday Americans are asking their elected officials to focus on the cost of living crisis and other U.S. catastrophes, but the meme replies with “best we can do is get rid of TikTok.”
It’s likely many of these memes were developed by people working for the CCP as a means of turning U.S. citizens against the politicians trying to save their data, privacy, and stop the overarching influence from China on the U.S. (LEARN MORE: Experts Warn Of China ‘Smokescreen’)
TikTok Is Basically A Spy Tool
TikTok claimed that it would stop sending data back to the CCP under what they called “Project Texas.” In reality, “TikTok just kept on sharing sensitive U.S. data with China. Personnel inside China have simply ignored the Project Texas promises that TikTok has made to U.S. lawmakers,” Carr noted.
“Initially, TikTok denied the story and claimed that the reporters lacked journalist integrity. But eventually, TikTok was forced to confess that, yes, it had illicitly surveilled the locations of specific Americans despite its representations to lawmakers. And here’s the kicker,” he continued. “TikTok spied on those Americans at the exact moment in time when it was actively negotiating with U.S. officials to resolve TikTok’s national security concerns. In other words, right when TikTok had every incentive to operate in a trustworthy manner, it still didn’t. The truth is it couldn’t.” (LEARN MORE: China’s Stealth Invasion Of America Is Happening Now, Experts Warn)
