Less Than 25% Of Americans Hold Positive Views Of Government

Apr 16, 2024

A survey released in April found that only 22% of American adults have a positive perspective on the federal government.

A Pew Research Center survey published in April found that while state governments get mixed reviews, the federal government is fairly unpopular with the American public. On the local level, respondents seemed to like their government, with 61% viewing their respective officials positively. However this figure is down from 66% in 2019, Pew noted.

States also saw a 4-point decline in their favorability, as just 50% of respondents held a positive view of their governments. (LEARN MORE: Most US Voters Think CIA, FBI May Control 2024’s Election)

Democrats vs. Republicans

Only 32% of respondents who identified as Democrats said they held a favorable view of the federal government. This marks a 17-point drop since May 2022, but still higher than how Democrats felt under former President Donald Trump. Just 19% of Democrats viewed Trump’s federal government in a positive light. Only 11% of Republicans viewed the federal government favorably. During Trump’s time in office, this number was 49%. Republicans living in Republican-run states had a 70% positive view of their state, with Republicans in Democrat states having just a 22% favorability ranking for state governments.
