Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel announced her resignation Monday after spending seven years in her role.
“I have decided to step aside at our spring training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a chair of their choosing,” McDaniel said in a statement shared by Newsmax. “The R.N.C. has historically undergone change once we have a nominee, and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition. “I remain committed to winning back the White House and electing Republicans up and down the ballot in November.”
McDaniel took the position as RNC chair in 2017, shortly after former President Donald Trump took office in 2016. But our former Commander in Chief has been calling for McDaniel’s replacement in recent years. (LEARN MORE: Biden Ignores Christian Massacres For 3rd Year In A Row)
Who Does Trump Want For RNC Chair?
Trump publicly backed North Carolina GOP Chair Michael Whatley for McDaniel’s role, while throwing his support behind his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as co-chair, Newsmax noted. “This group of three is highly talented, battle-tested, and smart. They have my complete and total endorsement to lead the Republican National Committee,” Trump said in February.
McDaniel is the first female chair of the RNC and was reelected for a fourth term by a huge margin in 2023. She’s the niece of Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, and strongly supported by long-term Republican leaders such as former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
