A late January hearing held by the Senate Judiciary Committee went viral after lawmakers called on Big Tech CEOs to do more to protect children from hard when they’re browsing online.

CEOs from Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and Discord attended the hearing where Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz said “every social media company needs to do much more to protect children,” according to the Washington Stand. A majority of the backlash was directed at Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

“Mr. Zuckerberg, you and the companies before us, I know you don’t mean it to be so, but you have blood on your hands. You have a product that’s killing people,” South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham told the billionaire.

Abuse Of Children Online

Cruz used a dark example to show how easy it is for abuse to proliferate on these platforms. He pulled up an Instagram post (a platform owned by Meta) that was flagged for potentially containing images of child sex abuse. Instead of the content being removed from the platform, users were given the option to see the images anyway.

“In what sane universe is there a link for ‘see results anyway?” Cruz asked. In response, Zuckerberg said the situation “might be wrong,” so Meta is reluctant to pull down the images. (LEARN MORE: 23 States Pass 84 Laws Protecting Children From Medical Harm)

“[It’s] clear that Big Tech is prioritizing profit over the wellbeing of our children,” Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn said following the hearing. “These executives have failed to take action and are sitting idly by as our children are dying from fentanyl and being trafficked online.”
