State Law Destroys Employment Opportunities For All

A new law signed by Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2024 is likely responsible for countless restaurant employees losing their jobs in recent weeks.

Rubio’s Coastal Grill, a popular West Coast restaurant chain, is closing 48 of its restaurants in California thanks to soaring business costs, according to Fox Business. “While painful, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic long-term plan to position Rubio’s for success for years to come,” the company announced on Monday. Some 86 locations throughout California, Nevada, and Arizona will remain open, but that hasn’t stopped countless members of staff from losing their jobs.

Struggles To Keep Going

While Ralph Rubio, who founded the business, claimed that his employees were underperforming — leading to the 48 restaurant closures — the timing is suspect. Two months ago, Newsom implemented a new law requiring a $20 minimum wage for fast food employees, except at restaurants owned by at least one major donor of Newsom’s political career. Since forcing businesses to abide by this new law, several California fast-food chains have had to fire workers. Some even fired workers ahead of the new law, which is arguably the opposite of what Newsom intended with the legislation. However, California has a track record of voting in politicians who say one thing yet their actions lead to the complete opposite. Other businesses hurt by the legislation include Pizza Hut, which laid off 841 drivers instead of paying them Newsom’s demanded $20 per hour.
