The Holy Spirit and His Role in Our Lives
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13).
Reverend Billy Graham said, “The Holy Spirit lives inside us when we accept Christ and helps us grow closer to God. There is not a person anywhere who can be a Christian without the Holy Spirit. There is not a person who can follow Christ without the help of the Holy Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus to us, helping us to become more like Him. Before He ascended to Heaven, Jesus told the disciples that He would send the Spirit to them. “‘When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring Me glory by telling you whatever He receives from Me. All that belongs to the Father is Mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever He receives from me’” (John 16:13-15). The Holy Spirit, in His goodness, also brings conviction to our lives, helping us recognize our sin so we will turn away from it. “And when He has come, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8).
Instead of depending on our own limited human ability, He is the supernatural guide that resides within us. He breathes on our interpretation and understanding of God’s Word. He strengthens our belief, testifying that Jesus Christ is our Messiah, who died for us and rose again. The Spirit enables believers to produce fruit reflecting the desires of God—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self- control (Galatians 5:22-23). Without the Holy Spirit, we can’t produce lasting fruit. These fruits are the product of His work in us and are essential to our spiritual journey and testimony.
God identifies us as His own and has sealed us with the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30). We are HIS!
Call to Action: There are many scriptures about the Holy Spirit’s active role in our lives. Here are a few to start. Spend some time in the Word studying about Him this week!
“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you” (John 14:26).
“And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:2).
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be My witnesses, telling people about Me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:15-17).
Prayer: Father God, we thank You today for the gift of the Holy Spirit and for dwelling in us through Him. Help us to be fruit-bearers, reflecting Your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in all we do and say. We are so grateful to be Yours. We love You, Lord! In the precious name of Jesus, we pray, Amen!
Final thought: The Holy Spirit refines us and forges an unmistakable passion in our hearts for God.
