US Citizens Threaten Our Own Free Speech: POLL
A poll conducted by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) released polling data in August that revealed 53% of respondents think the First Amendment goes “too far.”
The survey was part of the National Speech Index and America’s Political Pulse by the Polarization Research Lab, which asked whether the text of the First Amendment “goes too far in the rights it guarantees.” Some 47% said this statement “does not describe my thoughts at all” while the rest felt — at least to some degree — the language goes too far.
- 9% said the First Amendment “slightly” goes too far
- 16% said “somewhat” or “mostly”
- 1 in 8 people felt “completely” that the First Amendment “goes too far”
‘Dictators Fantasy’
“Evidently, one out of every two Americans wishes they had fewer civil liberties,” Chief Research Advisor Sean Stevens said, according to The Christian Post. “Many of them reject the right to assemble, to have a free press, and to petition the government. This is a dictator’s fantasy.”
Even more shockingly, respondents said they had trust that our government could make “fair decisions about what speech is considered terrifying.” A further 35% did not trust the government with this at all, while 27% had some trust. ‘Dire’
When asked about protests on campuses over the Israel-Hamas war, 38% said the protests should be allowed to continue, while 28% wanted protestors arrested. “While many of the protests were lawful, some of the most high-profile protests included tent encampments, vandalism, and the occupation of buildings. These behaviors are not protected by the First Amendment and cannot be justified in the name of free speech,” Stevens continued.
“Americans have little tolerance for some forms of protected speech and a lot of tolerance for unprotected conduct, when it should be the other way around,” he added. “The state of free speech in America is dire.” (LEARN MORE: Biden Ignores Christian Massacres For 3rd Year In A Row)
