A Chicago-area school district is trying to boost academic achievement by only offering black and Latino students classes segregated by their race, the Washington Stand reported Wednesday.

These classes are described as “affinity” classes and aim to reduce the achievement gap by making students from racial minorities feel more comfortable. “Our black students are, for lack of a better word … at the bottom, consistently still. And they are being outperformed consistently,” the local area school board VP Monique Parsons said of the situation.

Instead of offering extra tutoring, funding for the schools, parental engagement programs, or other types of interventions that have a proven track record for success, the school board decided to segregate the students. Chicago Is Not Alone

San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Oakland, all left-leaning political strongholds, have offered segregated classes to specific high schools since at least 2015, the Washington Stand continued. Federal law prohibits these actions, but many schools have made the classes voluntary to avoid getting caught in the legal loophole. (LEARN MORE: Universal School Choice Enacted In 10th State. “We would all agree that it would be wrong if white people were looking to create spaces where everyone was white, but somehow the calculation is supposed to be different if black or brown people want to create spaces where no one is white,” FRC senior fellow Joseph Backholm told the outlet.
