Immediate Reactions To Trump’s Assassination Attempt

In the 12 or so hours following Saturday’s assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, a number of major reactions were noted by Politico.

Within hours of setting up a GoFundMe for the victims at Saturday’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump’s campaign raised more than $1 million. This was the desired funding goal, with proceeds going to the families of those killed and wounded at the event.

“All donations will be directed to these proud Americans as they grieve and recover. May God bless and unite our nation,” the page read. One of the donors was identified as Kid Rock, who gave $50,000.

Biden Gets Briefed

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris received a briefing on Sunday in the White House Situation Room concerning the previous night’s attack. The briefers are Attorney General Merrick Garland, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI director Christopher Wray, Secret Service director Kim Cheatle, national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Homeland Security Adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall, Politico stated.

Senators Speak Out

Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders gave an interview with MSNBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday morning, saying that “Politics should be kind of boring, you know?”

“Our healthcare system is dysfunctional. How do we fix it? Well, it’s kind of a boring discussion, but we need a health care system that guarantees health care to all people,” he added.

“I am familiar with political violence in all its forms. The bottom line is what we need as a nation, what a democracy is about, is not radical rhetoric,” Sanders noted. “What it is about is a serious discussion of where we are as a nation and how we go forward.”

Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn said that “I think it’s a time of reflection and introspection, and hopefully it will have an impact on the rhetoric, which I think when it’s heard by unstable individuals it sometimes contributes to them acting out … And so I just think we’re all trying to absorb the lessons from this.” (LEARN MORE: China Could ‘Overwhelm’ US Military Bases)
