Congress Preps For ‘Mass Casualty’ Event With Intense Law
A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a constitutional amendment in February, promoted by the Washington Post in September, that claims to preserve the continuity of Congress should there be a “mass casualty” event.
Despite ongoing claims that violent crime is decreasing across America, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Violent crime is actually creating a “dystopian Hell” across many of our major cities, according to many sources who spoke to the Daily Caller. Changes to reporting of certain violent crimes means largely Democrat and George Soros-backed city lawmakers are simply creating an “illusion” of safety in the stats, not reality.
“Imagine the unthinkable: a mass shooting of members of Congress that leaves a large swath of the country unrepresented and shifts the balance of political power in Washington,” wrote The Washington Post’s Am Gardner and Jacqueline Alemany, arguing that “such an outbreak of violence is not as unthinkable as it used to be, according to a bipartisan collection of House members.” (LEARN MORE: Attempted Trump Assassins Appeared In BlackRock Ads?)
Power Grabs During Crisis?
To combat such an “unthinkable” act (thought up by WaPo’s writers), Washington Democratic Rep. Derek Kilmer, Missouri Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, along with Republican’s Ohio Rep. Brad Wenstrup and South Carolina Rep. William Timmons are pushing for a constitutional amendment that would allow any indisposed members to be replaced quickly following such an event.
“We’ve seen a 300 percent increase in threats against members over the last seven years, according to the Capitol Police,” Kilmer told the outlet. “In an environment where we have seen a growing tendency toward political violence, imagine — horrifically — a baseball practice where someone has bad intentions and better aim. You can literally flip a majority for three to four months. Which I think is a frightening incentive for political violence.” (LEARN MORE: Bomb Threats Overwhelm Small US Town Amid Migrant Crisis)
It currently takes roughly four months, on average, to hold special elections to replace House members, largely due to procedural delays such as printing ballots and federal laws allowing military voters stationed overseas to engage in their election process.
Governors Choose The Leaders
“Their proposed constitutional amendment would require each member of the House to submit the names of at least five individuals from his or her political party to their state’s governor. In the event of that representative’s death, the governor would choose a name from the list within 10 days, and the House speaker would be required to seat them immediately,” WaPo explained. At least nine states have laws surrounding special elections related to the House, but 41 states have no laws. Federal law currently demands all special elections occur within 49 days of an “event of extraordinary circumstance.” The Constitution demands all House vacancies be filled by an elections, not necessarily with an interim appointment.
Incentivizing Violence?
Wenstrup argued in September that Congress should eliminate the incentive for an individual to commit political violence for the purpose of tipping the balance of power. As both he and Kilmer retire at the end of the year, there’s a slim chance the amendment would pass, WaPo stated. Of the 40 constitutional amendments introduced since 1945, none have passed.
A post shared on X about the legislation elicited fairly negative replies, with many referencing the repeated assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump as he moves through his campaign trail.
