GOP Chairman Resigns Amid Alleged Scandal

The Chairman for the Arizona Republican Party Jeff DeWit resigned from his position in January after GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake leaked an audio recording of him trying to keep her out of the 2024 elections.

The audio recording appeared to show DeWit trying to bribe Lake into not running for office in 2024, The Hill reported. “There are very powerful people who want to keep you out,” the audio file says. These people were from the “east” and they thought Lake could be bought off to “take a pause for a couple of years,” DeWit allegedly said. After this, Lake would have been allowed to “go right back to what” she was doing with her campaign.

“But they are willing to put their money where their mouth is, in a big way,” DeWit said. “So, this conversation never happened.” Lake said not even a billion dollars would keep her from running for the Senate position. (LEARN MORE: Biden Sued Over Conservative Censorship)

Calls To Resign

“He’s gotta resign. We can’t have somebody who is corrupt and compromised running the Republican Party,” Lake told NBC following the audio leak. DeWit has only been in the position since January 2023.

DeWit Bites Back

“The recording, from over ten months ago, is not only taken out of context but also undermines the integrity of private discussions critical for party leadership,” DeWit said following the leak, according to Fox10. “Contrary to the notion of me being an enemy of Lake’s, this conversation was recorded while I was actually employing Lake in my private company. In fact, for over a year and a half we had many conversations where I was looking out for her financial interests. The ethical breach in her recording of our conversation, while Lake was my employee, raises serious legal and moral concerns.”

“This morning, I was determined to fight for my position. However, a few hours ago, I received an ultimatum from Lake’s team: resign today or face the release of a new, more damaging recording,” he noted. You can read his full letter on the link above.
