House Passes TikTok Ban. What Happens Next?

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill in March that would ban the social media app TikTok across the nation if its China-based owners don’t sell their stake in the company.

The House overwhelmingly supported the effort in a 352 – 65 vote on Wednesday. Supporters of the bill say the social media is a threat to American integrity as China can effectively steal all of the data held on all U.S. devices that have downloaded and used the app, according to the Christian Post. Law in China essentially states that any company operating within the country may have to surrender everything to the state for them to use it as they please. This includes all of the data held on Americans by Chinese-owned and China-related organizations and corporations.

“We have given TikTok a clear choice,” said Washington Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. “Separate from your parent company ByteDance, which is beholden to the CCP (the Chinese Communist Party), and remain operational in the United States, or side with the CCP and face the consequences. What Happens Next?

The decision over TikTok’s future will now head to the Senate. Republican Sen. Josh Hawley has urged lawmakers to support either banning or restricting the app. He believes it provides China with everything they need to spy on U.S. citizens. China’s Foreign Ministry has accused the U.S. of bullying as a result of the legislation. “If the pretext of national security can be used to suppress excellent companies from other countries arbitrarily, there is no fairness or justice to speak of,” Beijing spokesperson Wang Wenbin said of the situation.

Some states have already banned the app. Montana was the first to prohibit mobile app stores from offering it to customers over concerns its being used to spy on citizens. (LEARN MORE: China Uses TikTok As U.S. ‘Trojan Horse’)
