Rabbi Urges Columbia University Students To Flee: REPORT

Apr 22, 2024

Columbia University Rabbi Elie Buechler urged students to leave the campus Sunday due to “extreme antisemitism,” the New York Post reported.

“The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy,” Buechler said Sunday in a WhatsApp message to students. “It deeply pains me to say that I would strongly recommend you return home as soon as possible and remain home until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved.”

His warnings came after a night of intense anti-Israel protests at the Manhattan-based campus. One of the protesters apparently held a sign that suggested Hamas terrorists target Israeli students next. (LEARN MORE: Multiple States Fear Full Iran-Israel War)

Hatred At School

“It is not our job as Jews to ensure our own safety on campus,” he said. “No one should have to endure this level of hatred, let alone at school,” Buechler noted.

Dozens of protesters were cuffed after more protests in the week leading up to Saturday, the outlet reported. New York City Mayor Eric Adams even threatened to bring in more law enforcement to curb activities. (LEARN MORE: Conservatives Warn Of Terror Vulnerability from U.S. Open Border)

“I am horrified and disgusted with the antisemitism being spewed at and around the Columbia University campus — like the example of a young woman holding a sign with an arrow pointing to Jewish students stating ‘Al-Qasam’s Next Targets,’ or another where a woman is literally yelling ‘We are Hamas,’ or another where groups of students are chanting ‘We don’t want no Zionists here’ — and I condemn this hate speech in the strongest of terms,” Adams said in a statement late Sunday evening.

“Hate has no place in our city, and I have instructed the NYPD to investigate any violation of law they receive a report about and will arrest anyone found to be breaking the law,” he continued. (LEARN MORE: Iran Tells Israel That None Of Its Embassies Are Safe)
