Trump’s Probe Of Big Tech Censorship Of Americans Puts Silicon Valley ‘On Notice’

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) officially opened a request for public comments on censorship by Big Tech companies in late February, and it could have sweeping consequences for Silicon Valley.
The FTC wants Americans to tell them about instances where they’ve faced consequences from companies for writing, posting, or engaging in political speech, according to details shared by the Daily Caller. Requests for public comment typically come before a formal investigation is launched or policies are updated by the FTC.
Americans will apparently be asked “if they have ever been suspended, banned, shadow banned, or otherwise received degraded services by technology platforms after sharing their opinions,” the outlet explained. The document also suggests that users could have been punished by various Big Tech companies for activities or other things they did outside of the platforms. “Comments from the public help us learn about new technologies and business practices, consider diverse points of view, and improve the quality of our policy-making, law enforcement and education efforts,” says the FTC website.
Silicon Valley ‘On Notice’
“In case there was any doubt, Big Tech is on notice. We do not intend to take our foot off the gas any time soon. The days of censorship and monopolies are over,” one senior FTC official told the outlet.
The FTC is also asking the public if Big Tech was pressured by local, state, or federal governments to censor user content. In a recent interview, Meta CEO claimed that officials from the Biden administration cursed at and yelled at employees of his social media company to censor “true” information posted by users. Meta went so far as to essentially announce the de-censoring of users in a January video shared by the platform’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “We’re going to work with President Trump to push back on governments around the world,” Zuckerberg explained at the time. “They’re going after American companies and pushing to censor more. The US has the strongest constitutional protections for free expression in the world.”
