Why The SAVE Act Is Essential To Election Integrity: LEE

May 14, 2024

An article written by Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee, published Monday in The Federalist, detailed how the SAVE Act is designed to mitigate the honor system problem within America’s elections.

Did you know that government officials who register voters and conduct federal elections aren’t allowed to require proof of citizenship? This is far from common knowledge and yet has the potential to completely up-end the very nature of America and the principles upon which our nation was built.

“It’s therefore shockingly easy for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, leaving our elections dangerously vulnerable to foreign interference,” Lee explained in his op-ed. “Anyone — even an illegal alien or other noncitizen — can register to vote in federal elections, just by checking a box and signing a form. This is all on the honor system. No proof of citizenship is required.” (LEARN MORE: How To Protect Your Local Elections Today)

Supreme Court Rulings?

“It’s not just that state officials — who are responsible for federal voter registration and elections in our country — don’t verify citizenship in this context; it’s that the Supreme Court has told them that they’re not allowed to do so,” Lee continued. Thankfully, the SAVE Act is designed to fix this bizarre loophole in our nation’s election integrity. If passed, the SAVE Act would require states to not only get voters to provide proof of citizenship for upcoming elections, but it would require states to review existing federal-level voter files and remove all those who are noncitizens.

Every State Issues Licenses to Noncitizens

“Remember: every state issues driver’s licenses to noncitizens, and 19 states issue them to illegal aliens … this … makes it shockingly easy for aliens — legal and illegal — to vote in federal elections, even though they’re prohibited from doing so,” Lee noted. “Considering that there are now nearly 30 million noncitizens in the U.S., including about 12 million who have entered illegally since the last presidential election, we desperately need the SAVE Act.” (LEARN MORE: State Finds County Violated Election Law In 2022)

Democrats apparently seem to think that illegal aliens and noncitizens would never vote in federal elections, Lee argued. “That argument fails for one simple reason: it implausibly assumes universal compliance with a law that has become breathtakingly easy (and correspondingly tempting) to violate,” Lee noted. It should also be noted that simply the act of being an illegal immigrant proves someone is willing to violate American law. So why would they not do the same to hijack our federal elections?
